Air Traffic Projections for Morocco
Morocco is poised to experience a significant increase in air traffic over the coming weeks, as indicated by Eurocontrol's recent seasonal plan. The European organization anticipates a considerable rise in flight movements within the control centers of Casablanca and Agadir from August 3 to September 27. Notably, Eurocontrol is confident that the existing infrastructure will be able to accommodate this surge without compromising operational capacity.
The forecasts reveal that the Casablanca regional control center may handle as many as 1,050 daily flights during this period. In the initial week of August, the daily traffic is expected to exceed 1,020 flights on average, with a slight decrease anticipated as September draws to a close. Meanwhile, Agadir is projected to manage between 730 and 870 flights daily, particularly busy on Saturdays, with a peak expected on September 26.
Capacity Management Amid Challenges
Despite facing personnel shortages in certain services related to traffic management and technical maintenance, Eurocontrol has confirmed that no reductions in air traffic control sector capacities are planned. The organization has acknowledged that peak demand periods may bring the demand close to available limits at times. At Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, daily flight movements are expected to range from 292 to 315, maintaining a maximum capacity of 33 movements per hour.
Additionally, several technical advancements are on the horizon. These developments include a new sectorization of the Casablanca airspace, the implementation of RNAV 5 navigation routes, and the establishment of a new interface with Seville starting December 24. The initiative to develop a free-route airspace system will continue into 2027 in both Casablanca and Agadir. Eurocontrol has also scheduled the Marrakech Airshow for October 5-10, an event that will require specific coordination with the European air network.
