Ben Yedder Channels Maradona with Controversial Goal in Morocco

Wissam Ben Yedder's Hand of God Moment

In a striking display reminiscent of football legend Diego Maradona, Wissam Ben Yedder has found himself at the center of a controversial moment during a recent match in Morocco. Playing for Wydad Casablanca against Olympic Club de Safi on the night of June 9, Ben Yedder attempted to replicate Maradona's infamous 'Hand of God' goal scored against England in 1986. While the former Monaco striker did not navigate through the entire opposing team, he did receive a well-placed cross from Hakim Ziyech, which he directed into the net. However, upon closer inspection, it became clear that Ben Yedder had not used his head, as initially thought, but rather his hand to score.

Initially, the referee allowed the goal, but after reviewing the footage, he reversed his decision, disallowing the goal and issuing a yellow card to the French forward for his unsportsmanlike conduct. Despite this setback, Wydad Casablanca managed to secure a narrow victory against the bottom team in the league, temporarily lifting them to fourth place, just three points behind leaders RSB Berkane. This incident highlights the differences in football regulations over the years, as unlike in 1986, there is now VAR technology available to prevent such controversial moments.
