Heritage, Cinema, Poetry, and Traditions: A Cultural Renaissance in Morocco

Celebrating Moroccan Heritage Across the Nation

From Montpellier to Dakhla, and including cities like Agadir, Larache, and Salé, a plethora of cultural initiatives are taking place that celebrate Morocco's rich heritage, arts, and contemporary creativity. These vibrant expressions include exhibitions, festivals, and literary meetings, all showcasing the remarkable diversity of the Moroccan cultural scene while fostering international collaboration and exchange.

Spotlight on Historical Morocco in Montpellier

This month, Montpellier is hosting the traveling exhibition titled "The Gates of Moroccan History: Dynasties, Sovereigns, and Personalities." Organized by the "Cœur de lionne" association in partnership with the Moroccan Consulate, this exhibition offers a journey through significant figures and milestones that have shaped Morocco's history. Visitors can learn about key historical personalities from Moulay Idriss to King Mohammed VI, as well as the pivotal moments of the Kingdom's past. A roundtable discussion on the Moroccan model, its heritage, and cultural diversity brought together academics, religious leaders, local officials, and diplomats to discuss values of coexistence, cultural plurality, and openness.

Meanwhile, Agadir is set to host the eighth edition of the International Traditional Folklore Festival from July 7 to 11. This event, organized by the Flamon Association for Art and Socio-Cultural Development in collaboration with CIOFF Morocco, will feature performances from various countries, street shows, artistic workshops, and cultural exchanges. An international conference focused on heritage will provide participants with a platform to discuss experiences and practices related to preserving popular traditions. The goal is to promote folk arts, encourage intercultural dialogue, and enhance the cultural and tourist vibrancy of the Souss-Massa region.

Bridging Heritage and International Dialogue at the Mata Festival

The 14th edition of the International "Mata" Equestrian Festival is scheduled to take place from June 12 to 14 in the commune of Larbaa de Ayacha, within the Larache province. Under the High Patronage of King Mohammed VI, this year’s festival will highlight the southern provinces of Morocco. The festival's centerpiece is the renowned "Mata" equestrian competition, a tradition passed down through generations among the Jbala tribes near Jbel Al Alam. This ancestral practice, associated with rural spring celebrations, includes the creation of a doll called "the bride" or "the princess" made from reeds and fabrics by women and young girls of the tribes, symbolizing fertility, prosperity, and blessings following the wheat harvest.

Additionally, the event will launch the "ELI Morocco 2026" forum, gathering decision-makers, experts, and economic actors to discuss opportunities for cooperation among Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and the Atlantic space. The festival will also feature artisan exhibitions, Saharan cooperatives, and national artists, enriching the event's programming.

In Dakhla, the "Dakhla Project" will hold its third edition from November 19 to 21, emphasizing its independence while maintaining ties with the Dakhla International Film Festival. This initiative aims to bolster support for authors and producers of fiction and documentary projects. Furthermore, a new initiative, "Doc Dak," will focus on developing documentary filmmaking in the southern provinces, providing training, mentorship, and networking opportunities for young directors.

In Salé, the 16th edition of the "Maqamat" Festival recently dedicated an evening to the city’s female poets. The works of Aicha Belarbi, Lamiae Naima El Jem, and Imane El Ouantadi were showcased to an audience of writers and intellectuals, highlighting themes of memory, social issues, spirituality, and human experience through both classical poetry and zajal.
