Defending Spanish Sovereignty in Melilla

In a recent interview on the program 'La Linterna', hosted by Ángel Expósito, Juan José Imbroda, the President of the autonomous city of Melilla, expressed firm views regarding the recent migration pressures faced by both Melilla and Ceuta. Imbroda highlighted that the citizens of Melilla are not only concerned about the situation but are also demonstrating solidarity and pride in their community's response, particularly during local events that have aimed to support their neighboring city of Ceuta. He emphasized that both cities represent Spain and Europe in North Africa, enjoying the same rights as any other regions within the national territory. "Stepping on this soil is akin to walking in the Plaza Mayor of Madrid or the Plaza del Obradoiro," he stated, clarifying that this assertion is not aggressive but rather a matter of legal rights, freedom, and Western values.

Addressing Accusations and Urgent Needs

Imbroda vehemently rejected accusations of xenophobia directed towards Melilla and Ceuta, labeling them as unfounded claims perpetuated by those who exploit the naivety of others. He praised the harmonious coexistence of the three monotheistic religions within Melilla and pointed out that his own governing team includes representatives from both Muslim and Jewish communities. Furthermore, addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis of irregular immigration, Imbroda recalled past tragic events at the border and criticized the actions of Moroccan forces during these incidents. He urges a deeper understanding of the tragic history associated with the border crossings, including a significant tragedy that occurred at the Barrio Chino border post.

In addition to these discussions, Imbroda raised alarms about the critical deficiencies in essential services within Melilla. He pointed out the historical lack of adequate resources for healthcare professionals, judicial authorities, security forces, and military personnel stationed in the city. He warned that the current crisis presents an opportunity for a significant turning point, emphasizing that the shortcomings in health services are so severe that in urgent medical situations, the best option often becomes taking a flight to the mainland of Spain.
