Pedro Sanchez's Stance on Cooperation with Morocco
In a recent statement, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez firmly rejected any allegations of Moroccan involvement in the recent events that transpired in Ceuta, emphasizing that misinformation propagated by right-wing factions and networks linked to Russia and Israel is to blame. During his remarks on Cadena SER radio, Sanchez stated, "We will continue to investigate what actually happened," dismissing any accountability on the part of Moroccan authorities.
He further elaborated that, "No intelligence agency that collaborates with the Spanish government has indicated even the slightest suspicion of Moroccan authorities being involved in any manner." Sanchez stressed the importance of recognizing that the resolution of this crisis hinges on cooperation rather than suspicion towards Morocco. In this light, he announced an additional aid package of 168 million euros designated for Ceuta to address the economic repercussions stemming from the influx of migrants.
According to Sanchez, the current understanding is that a decree issued by the Supreme Court on July 8 was misrepresented and disseminated across social media through misleading rumors and false information, as well as by criminal organizations engaged in human trafficking. He acknowledged the structural disparities that complicate the borders of the autonomous city of Ceuta and the autonomous city of Melilla, noting the significant differences in opportunities and per capita income between the two sides.
Sanchez pointed out that following July 30 and 31, a surge of rumors and misleading information surfaced on social media platforms linked to both Russia and Israel, alongside a broader international right-wing movement that routinely exploits immigration issues to criticize Spain and create discord within Europe.
