Vox Calls for Diplomatic Break with Morocco Over Sovereignty Issues

In a recent press conference, Pepa Millán, the spokesperson for Vox in the Congress of Deputies, asserted that the Spanish government, led by Pedro Sánchez, must sever diplomatic ties with Morocco if the Kingdom of Mohamed VI continues its alleged invasion and attacks on Spain's sovereignty. Millán emphasized the need to withdraw the Spanish ambassador from Morocco and summon the Moroccan ambassador to Spain, highlighting the escalating tensions regarding territorial claims over Ceuta and Melilla, as well as other disputed territories.

The political party, under the leadership of Santiago Abascal, has taken a proactive approach by filing a proposal in Congress that urges the Sánchez government to demand a clear and unequivocal public statement from Morocco, reaffirming respect for Spain's sovereignty and territorial integrity. This initiative specifically rejects any Moroccan claims over regions such as Ceuta, Melilla, the Chafarinas Islands, the Vélez de la Gomera rock, the Perejil Island, and the Alhucemas Islands and Rock, declaring that Spain's sovereignty over these territories is non-negotiable and cannot be included in any bilateral dialogues aimed at transferring these areas to Morocco.

Joint Initiative Across Spanish Parliaments

Vox's recently registered initiative is part of a broader strategy that encompasses all parliaments where the party holds representation, aiming to reaffirm Spain's sovereignty over Ceuta, Melilla, and other Spanish enclaves in North Africa. This coordinated effort seeks to apply pressure across various institutions, ensuring that Spain's territorial claims are firmly defended. Millán has directly pointed fingers at Morocco, accusing it of orchestrating the 'invasion' and leveraging migration flows to exert pressure on Spain.

Moreover, Vox has called for the suspension of the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness, and Cooperation between Spain and Morocco until the latter explicitly acknowledges Spanish sovereignty and cooperates effectively in the repatriation of Moroccan citizens. Millán argued that no economic interest or diplomatic convenience should justify the Spanish government's silence or ambiguity in the face of foreign claims on Spanish territory, underscoring the need for a firm stance in international relations.
