Morocco's US Treasury Securities Holdings Reach $4.9 Billion in August 2026

In a significant financial development for Morocco, the nation's investments in US Treasury securities have increased to an impressive $4.906 billion (approximately MAD 45.6 billion) as of August 2026. This marks a notable rise from the previous month's total of $4.777 billion (around MAD 44.4 billion), according to the latest data released by the US Department of the Treasury.

The month-on-month increase amounts to $129 million (about MAD 1.2 billion), reflecting a growth of around 2.7%. This upward trend is consistent with the pattern observed since April, when Morocco's holdings were recorded at $3.846 billion (approximately MAD 35.8 billion). The figures continued to climb, reaching $4.181 billion (MAD 38.9 billion) in May, followed by $4.603 billion (MAD 42.8 billion) in June, and finally hitting $4.777 billion (MAD 44.4 billion) in July.

Moreover, when compared to August 2025, the current holdings represent an impressive increase of approximately 30%, showcasing Morocco's growing financial engagement with US securities. The data originates from the US Treasury's Treasury International Capital (TIC) system, which meticulously tracks foreign investments in US securities. It is essential to note that these figures encompass various maturities of Treasury debt and include both public and private investors based in Morocco, rather than solely reflecting the Moroccan government's holdings.

US Treasury securities are crucial debt instruments that the US government issues to meet its borrowing requirements. They range from short-term Treasury bills to longer-term Treasury notes and bonds, and are often regarded as highly liquid assets. This appeal extends to governments and financial institutions, which typically include them in their investment portfolios.

The increase in Morocco's holdings is part of a broader trend where foreign investors ramped up their net purchases of long-term US securities by $300.7 billion (roughly MAD 2.8 trillion) in August alone. This surge included $257.8 billion (approximately MAD 2.4 trillion) from private foreign investors and $42.9 billion (around MAD 399 billion) from foreign official institutions, as reported by the US Treasury.

The Treasury emphasizes that its country-level data largely depend on information sourced from US-based custodians and broker-dealers. Consequently, the reported country may not always accurately represent the ultimate owner of a security, particularly when assets are managed through intermediaries located in other nations.

The next release of Treasury International Capital data, which will cover the month of September 2026, is scheduled for November 18, providing further insights into Morocco's financial activities and investments.
