El Al Suspends Flights to Marrakech as United Airlines Expands US Routes

El Al Suspends Flights to Marrakech Amid Security Concerns

In a significant move reflecting ongoing security concerns, El Al Airlines has announced the suspension of its planned flights to Marrakech, Morocco. This decision follows similar actions taken by Israeli carriers Arkia and Israir, both of which have halted their flight operations to the vibrant Moroccan city. Originally set to begin on November 16, the service operated by El Al's Sun d’Or subsidiary will now remain grounded until at least December 15. The airline has stated that it is in continuous communication with security officials and relevant authorities to secure the necessary approvals to resume operations.

Passengers who have already purchased tickets for the now-canceled flights have been offered several options, including a full monetary refund, a credit voucher for future travel, or the opportunity to rebook their flights to other destinations serviced by El Al or Sun d’Or in Europe without incurring additional costs. This flexibility aims to accommodate travelers affected by the sudden cancellation, providing them with alternative travel plans.

United Airlines Expands Its Service to the US

In contrast to the situation with El Al and other Israeli airlines, United Airlines is expanding its flight offerings from Israel to various destinations in the United States. Beginning on October 26, United will introduce four weekly flights from Tel Aviv to Chicago, and from October 28, it will also commence three weekly flights to Washington, D.C. This expansion comes on the heels of the airline's recent return to the Tel Aviv-New York route, indicating a strong commitment to enhancing its service amidst the evolving dynamics of air travel.

As tensions surrounding security continue to escalate, the decision by Israeli airlines to suspend flights to Morocco highlights the complexities of international travel in the region. While El Al and others reevaluate their operations, United Airlines is actively seeking to broaden its reach in the US market, a move that could reshape the competitive landscape of transcontinental flights. The airline's plans to launch additional routes, including a service to San Francisco set to start on March 30, 2027, further emphasize its strategic growth amid uncertain times.
