Spanish Intelligence Warned of Potential Mass Influx of Migrants to Ceuta

In a significant revelation, the Spanish intelligence agency CNI (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia) issued a warning to authorities in Ceuta just one day prior to an unprecedented mass arrival of migrants at the end of July. This information, disclosed through classified documents released by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's government in Madrid, highlights the agency's concerns over a possible "land and sea assault" on the North African enclave.

On July 29, the CNI alerted both the governmental representation in Ceuta and the Guardia Civil police unit, citing calls circulating on social media platforms encouraging individuals to cross the border the following day. Following these warnings, two organized groups amassed approximately 180,000 followers, indicating substantial mobilization efforts among potential migrants.

In another communication, the CNI detailed intentions to attempt entry into Ceuta both by swimming and through breaches of the border fence. Furthermore, the intelligence agency informed Moroccan authorities of the situation, emphasizing the cooperative effort in managing the migrant crisis.

As of July 30 and 31, governmental reports indicated that around 80,000 migrants had arrived in Ceuta from Morocco. While many of these individuals subsequently returned to Morocco, thousands remain within the Spanish enclave, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by local authorities.

The government has released approximately 40 documents from the period between July 1 and August 1, aimed at demonstrating that there were no prior warnings regarding the scale of the migrant influx. However, as of now, there has been no official statement from either the government or the opposition regarding the implications of these new disclosures.
