Wydad and Raja to Play at Larbi Zaouli Due to Maintenance at Complexe Mohammed V
The renowned Complexe Mohammed V in Casablanca, Morocco, is set to temporarily close its doors to facilitate crucial maintenance work on its pitch. This closure has necessitated that both the Wydad and Raja clubs, two of the most prominent football teams in the country, relocate some of their upcoming home matches to the alternative venue of Larbi Zaouli Stadium. This decision aims to ensure that the playing surface is in optimal condition ahead of the highly anticipated match between Morocco and Niger, scheduled for November 13 as part of the qualifying rounds for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
According to the schedule released by the National Professional Football League (LNFP), the Wydad team is set to face Moghreb Tétouan on Saturday, October 31, at 6 PM, at Larbi Zaouli, while Raja will take on Hassania Agadir on Wednesday, October 28, also at 6 PM. Raja is expected to host Ittihad Tanger on Sunday, November 8, at 8 PM, in the same stadium.
Reasons Behind the Closure of Complexe Mohammed V
The temporary closure of this iconic stadium is primarily for the purpose of maintaining its grass pitch, which is essential for hosting high-level matches. The maintenance involves a process known as "overseeding," commonly executed in major Moroccan sports venues to ensure the grass remains dense and resilient throughout the winter season.
The pitch at Complexe Mohammed V features a hybrid natural grass system that includes two complementary varieties: Bermuda grass, which thrives in warmer temperatures and is highly durable, and Ray grass, also known as "regro," which takes over during the cooler winter months. This seasonal transition ensures a consistently green and robust pitch, capable of supporting the demands of top-tier football.
As temperatures rise in spring, the Ray grass gradually recedes, allowing the Bermuda grass to flourish once again. To facilitate this growth, a resting period is necessary for the new seeds to germinate effectively, ensuring that the pitch is fully prepared for the return of competitive play.
The reopening of the Complexe Mohammed V is eagerly awaited as it will coincide with the national team’s match against Niger on November 13, at 8 PM. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has confirmed the match will take place in Casablanca, highlighting the importance of having a well-maintained pitch for the Lions of the Atlas. This event will mark the national team's return to this esteemed venue after more than four years, with their last appearance being on March 29, 2022, against the Democratic Republic of Congo, which culminated in a 4-1 victory.
As the maintenance work progresses, fans and players alike are hopeful that the pitch at Complexe Mohammed V will be in pristine condition, ready to host the Lions of the Atlas in a critical qualifying match for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
