Alberto Núñez Feijóo Advocates for Mature Relations with Morocco

Feijóo's Vision for Spain-Morocco Relations

In a recent discourse, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of Spain's Popular Party, articulated his approach toward fostering robust relations with the Kingdom of Morocco, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and loyalty. As the upcoming general elections on November 29 loom, Feijóo made it clear that prioritizing Spanish sovereignty remains a cornerstone of his political agenda. In an interview with "El Debate," he expressed his belief that Spain and Morocco are destined to coexist harmoniously, advocating for a diplomatic framework that is characterized by openness and a lack of constraints in bilateral dealings.

Feijóo's comments come in the wake of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's decision in April 2022 to support Morocco’s autonomy proposal for the disputed Sahara region. While acknowledging the significance of this issue for Spain, Feijóo expressed caution regarding any potential revision of Sánchez’s position, highlighting the need for a thorough understanding of the commitments made by the current government. He pointed out that foreign policy is not the prerogative of a single individual but rather a collective responsibility that requires parliamentary oversight.

Building Diplomatic Bridges

Furthermore, the Popular Party leader underscored the Sahara file as a matter of utmost importance for Spain, indicating that the incoming government must delineate its obligations in this regard based on the prevailing circumstances. In a personal anecdote, Feijóo shared his positive rapport with the Moroccan ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich, recalling their cordial interaction during the Spanish National Day reception on October 12. He conveyed to the ambassador his commitment to uphold his duties with warmth and respect, signaling his intention to amplify his efforts in defending Spain's interests, especially when he perceives shortcomings in the current administration's handling of relations with Morocco and the Sahara issue.
