Germany's Epic Comeback Leads Them to Final at Morocco 2026

Germany Secures a Spot in the Final of the IHF Women’s Under-16 World Championship

In a thrilling semi-final match at the 2026 IHF Women’s Under-16 World Championship held in Morocco, Germany demonstrated remarkable resilience by overcoming a four-goal deficit to triumph over Russia with a score of 34:31. This impressive comeback not only marked their fourth consecutive victory in the tournament but also secured them a place in the final, where they will face Hungary. The semi-final clash was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both teams showcasing their skills and determination on the court.

The match started with Germany and Russia evenly matched, as the first half concluded in a deadlock at 16:16. Despite having the opportunity to take a lead, Germany missed crucial shots, including two penalty attempts. However, the second half saw a shift in momentum when Russia began strongly, establishing a 6:2 scoring run that allowed them to pull ahead by four goals at 22:18 by the 37th minute. At this point, Russian goalkeeper Iana Iazykova was proving to be a formidable barrier, having saved 50% of the shots on goal she faced early in the second half.

Yet, Germany’s determination shone through, spearheaded by standout performances from their players. Right wing Nora Lueg was instrumental in the victory, netting an impressive ten goals, while right back Taya Nagel contributed significantly with eight goals of her own. This victory not only propels Germany into the finals but also provides them with a unique opportunity to achieve a remarkable double, following the success of their men's team, who clinched the title in the previous year’s IHF Men’s Under-17 World Championship.
