Protests Scheduled by Nurses in Fez, Morocco
The independent union of nurses and health technicians working in university hospitals in Fez has announced a series of protests, including two demonstrations set for October 27 and November 10, 2026. This action aims to raise awareness regarding what they describe as "unacceptable delays" in the disbursement of on-call compensation for the years 2024, 2025, and 2026. The union expresses its frustration over the lack of timely remuneration for the essential services provided by healthcare workers in Morocco.
According to the announced protest schedule, the first demonstration will take place within the university hospitals' premises on Tuesday, October 27, starting at noon, followed by a second demonstration outside the hospital facilities on November 10. The union firmly believes that these compensations are a "fundamental right" owed to health professionals for their physical and mental efforts in maintaining healthcare services, and should not be seen as a privilege granted at the discretion of the administration.
The union's urgent statement, which was shared with "Lemaroc360", emphasized that the payment of these compensations is grounded in decree No. 2.25.1067 and ministerial decision No. 650.26, which were published in the official gazette on April 9, 2026. The union has rejected any justifications for the delays in disbursement, asserting that the lack of timely remuneration undermines the morale and efforts of healthcare workers.
Moreover, the union highlighted that "no real reform can occur without valuing human resources, and no robust health system can exist without fairness for its workers." They argue that any institutional transformation is meaningless if nurses continue to fight for their rightful financial entitlements. As part of their strategy, the union has decided to communicate with the regional governor regarding this issue, holding the treasury official responsible for the refusal to issue these payments legally.
This escalation comes amid an ongoing dispute regarding compensation, as the union previously called for a boycott of the signing of these on-call compensations in their current form, which they deem "unjust and illegal." In contrast, the hospital administration, according to previous correspondence from the union, has claimed that the necessary financial allocations are available.
