New Moroccan Prime Minister Fátima El Mansuri Prioritizes Sahara Sovereignty

In a significant development for Morocco, the newly appointed Prime Minister Fátima El Mansuri has declared the control of the Sahara region as a top priority on her government's agenda. Speaking before Parliament, she emphasized her commitment to mobilizing international support for Morocco's sovereignty over the contested territory, reiterating that "Moroccan Sahara continues to occupy a priority position among national causes." This declaration underscores the government's determination to uphold the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and interests of the Kingdom of Morocco.

During her address, El Mansuri detailed the government's strategy to enhance support for Morocco's autonomy initiative under its sovereignty, while also promising to accelerate the development of the southern provinces. She highlighted the significance of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which was adopted a year ago and deemed Morocco's proposal for the Sahara as "the most viable solution" to the ongoing conflict. This resolution serves as a pivotal reference point for Morocco's diplomatic efforts in the region.

On the international front, El Mansuri reaffirmed the government's commitment to Morocco's traditional stance regarding the Palestinian cause, advocating for a peaceful solution based on the two-state framework to achieve a just and lasting peace. She drew attention to the guidelines set forth by His Majesty King Mohammed VI during his Throne Day speech last July, describing them as the "main reference" for her administration's policies. The government is also guided by the new development model and the 'Morocco 2035' project, which focuses on fostering a productive economy, qualified human capital, broader inclusion, sustainable territorial development, and an efficient state that harnesses energy for the public good.

In a nod to political unity within Morocco, El Mansuri noted that the government program is based on the convergence of principles from the parties within the ruling majority, aligning with their electoral commitments. She pledged to progressively implement these principles while ensuring operational realism and the sustainability of public finances.

The new Moroccan government took its oath of office before the King last Friday, revealing that El Mansuri will retain prominent figures in key positions, such as Abdeluafi Laftit as Minister of Interior, Naser Bourita in Foreign Affairs, and Abdel Latif Wahbi in Justice. A notable change occurred in the Ministry of Economy, now held by Fuzi Lekjaa, who is also the president of the Football Federation and the Minister Delegate for Budgets.
