Spanish Intelligence Warns of Potential Migrant Surge in Ceuta

The Spanish intelligence agency, CNI, issued a warning to authorities in Ceuta just a day prior to an unprecedented arrival of migrants at the end of July, signaling a potential "assault by land and sea" on the North African enclave. This alarming information comes from classified documents that have recently been declassified by the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Madrid.

According to these documents, the intelligence agency notified both the governmental representation in Ceuta and the Guardia Civil police unit on July 29 about calls circulating on social media, urging individuals to cross the border the following day. In a subsequent communication, the CNI described planned attempts for migrants to reach Ceuta by swimming and scaling the border fence. The documents also indicate that Moroccan authorities were informed about the situation.

On July 30 and 31, government reports indicated that as many as 80,000 migrants arrived in Ceuta from Morocco. Although most of these individuals returned to Morocco shortly thereafter, thousands are still residing in the Spanish enclave. This significant influx highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Spain and its border control measures in managing migrant flows.
