TAS Addresses the Morocco-Senegal CAN 2025 Final Dispute

TAS Hearing on Morocco-Senegal CAN 2025 Final

This Thursday marks a pivotal moment in African football as the football federations of Morocco and Senegal convene before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne. This hearing is crucial in addressing the ongoing dispute surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) final, which has been a topic of intense discussion for several months. Senegal's national team, the Lions of Teranga, had initially clinched the championship title with a narrow 1-0 victory. However, the match was notably disrupted when they temporarily walked off the field in protest against a penalty awarded to Morocco. Subsequently, on March 17, the CAF Appeals Jury controversially awarded the title to Morocco, citing a 3-0 victory on paper, based on articles 82 and 84 of their regulations. This decision prompted an immediate appeal from the Senegalese Football Federation, which has now turned to CAS in a bid to reclaim their championship title. As the involved parties prepare to present their arguments, CAS has made a statement regarding this highly anticipated hearing.

CAS's Commitment to Expedite the Process

Addressing concerns regarding the timeline of this process, CAS's General Director, Matthieu Reeb, sought to reassure fans from both countries while emphasizing that the procedural schedule was established in consultation with all parties involved. He acknowledged the prolonged wait experienced by supporters from both Senegal and Morocco, stating, "I understand that the anticipation for fans in Senegal, Morocco, and across Africa has been quite lengthy. We have set the procedural calendar with the agreement of all parties involved, including the schedule for today's hearing. The aim of CAS, as the final arbiter of sports justice, is to provide a well-reasoned decision as swiftly as possible following today’s hearing." Although a specific date for the verdict has yet to be announced, it appears that CAS is committed to advancing this case without undue delay.
