Algerian Civil Protection: Recovery of Deceased Child Ayoub from Well
On the evening of September 5, 2026, the Algerian Civil Protection agency confirmed the heartbreaking news that ten-year-old Ayoub had been retrieved deceased from a well. The tragic incident took place in the Béchar province, where Ayoub had fallen into a deep, dry well, prompting an extensive four-day rescue operation.
The rescue efforts involved digging a parallel well to reach Ayoub’s level, followed by the creation of a horizontal passageway towards him due to the narrowness of the well and the risk of soil collapse. The emergency teams were able to successfully descend to the bottom of the parallel well, commencing horizontal excavation with extreme caution.
The operation featured specialized teams, heavy machinery, and well exploration equipment, alongside medical staff and an ambulance on standby for the moment of extraction. The incident began when Ayoub fell into the narrow well, approximately 80 meters deep and only 40 centimeters in diameter, as reported by the Civil Protection agency.
Compounding the difficulty of the rescue was the nature of the well, which was not lined in some sections, coupled with the fragility of the surrounding soil, significantly complicating direct access to the child. The teams operated under exceedingly challenging conditions, requiring not only the excavation of a precise point but also the reinforcement and securing of the excavation path to prevent any sudden collapses that could jeopardize both Ayoub and the rescuers.
Meanwhile, Ayoub's family anxiously followed the operation, which turned into a matter of public concern in Algeria, as images and videos of the rescue efforts flooded social media platforms.
