20-Year Prison Sentence for Sexual Assault in Safi, Morocco

Severe Sentence for Sexual Assault Case in Safi, Morocco

The Criminal Chamber of the Appeal Court in Fes, Morocco, delivered a harsh verdict on Monday, sentencing a man from the city of Safi to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting his aunt, coupled with violence and theft of her money and jewelry. This incident occurred shortly after the defendant's release from prison.

The judgment was publicly announced by the judicial panel, presided over by Judge Mohamed Ben Maachou, who found the accused, identified only by the initials "A.Y.", guilty of the charges against him. The court imposed a sentence of two decades of imprisonment, alongside requiring the defendant to bear the legal costs.

The case dates back to August of the previous year when the accused reportedly broke into his aunt's home, a woman in her thirties, and subjected her to sexual assault accompanied by physical violence. Following the assault, he stole significant sums of money and jewelry from her possession before fleeing to an unknown location.

In response to the incident, law enforcement agencies promptly initiated investigations to ascertain the suspect's identity and whereabouts. Their efforts paid off when they apprehended him in the city of Safi just days after the crime was committed.

The public prosecutor's office charged the defendant with serious offenses including rape, sexual assault involving violence, and aggravated theft committed at night with the use of a weapon. This legal process culminated in the court's ruling that sentenced him to 20 years of effective imprisonment for his grievous actions.
