African Lion 2026: A Major Military Initiative in Morocco

On April 27, 2026, the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and the United States Armed Forces officially kicked off the 22nd edition of the 'African Lion' military exercise in Agadir. This significant military event, scheduled to run until May 8, 2026, unites nearly 5,000 military personnel from over 40 nations, alongside experts in security and defense. The opening ceremony took place at the Southern Zone Headquarters in Agadir, presided over by Major General Mohammed Benlouali and Major General Daniel Cederman, the Deputy Commander of the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), with representatives from participating countries in attendance.

The expansive military maneuvers will occur across multiple regions in Morocco, including Benguérir, Agadir, Tan-Tan, Taroudant, Dakhla, and Tifnit. The exercises encompass a wide range of activities including ground, air, and maritime operations, airborne operations, special forces training, and field command exercises. Notably, this year's iteration incorporates advanced technologies related to satellite operations, electronic warfare, and drone capabilities. Additionally, it features initiatives aimed at countering weapons of mass destruction, alongside medical, surgical, and social services in El Faïd, Taroudant Province, and Dakhla.

In preparation for this major exercise, the FAR initiated an academic training phase the previous week, focusing on topics such as drones, cybersecurity, space operations, and electronic warfare. The 'African Lion' exercise stands as the largest military drill conducted on the African continent, designed to enhance interoperability among participating forces and strengthen the strategic partnership between Morocco and the United States.
