Critical Developments in the Agadir Melloul Copper Project
The British firm Critical Mineral Resources (CMR) is making significant strides in its copper mining initiative located in the Agadir Melloul region, situated south of Taliouine. Recent drilling operations have yielded promising results, affirming the economically viable potential that the company initially projected. This ambitious project aims to validate a substantial resource base of 25 million tonnes of copper, which could set the stage for production to commence as early as 2027.
Charlie Long, the CEO of CMR, expressed optimism regarding the ongoing drilling program, which is progressing at a remarkable pace of 1,200 meters per month. He noted, "Agadir Melloul continues to exhibit shallow copper mineralization over very encouraging widths, and the increasing consistency observed in the cores bolsters our confidence in the project's significant potential." This development is pivotal as it reinforces CMR’s confidence in meeting its resource estimates and production timelines.
Strategic Goals and Future Prospects
Located approximately 50 kilometers east of the notable Tizert copper mine, which is operated by the Managem group, the Agadir Melloul project shares similar geological characteristics with the Tizert mine, including the same geological age and mineralization type. The Tizert mine boasts an impressive resource estimate of 130 million tonnes, which enhances the contextual significance of the Agadir Melloul project’s findings.
CMR's strategic vision encompasses the acquisition of over 25 million tonnes of certified mineral resources adhering to recognized standards. To achieve this ambitious target, the company is developing a mining block spanning at least 100 square kilometers of copper-bearing sedimentary terrain, with two areas already under exclusive rights. The drilling success rate, defined internally by a copper grade exceeding 0.30%, currently stands at approximately 27%, significantly surpassing the original target set between 5% and 10%. This success underscores the project's promising outlook and the potential for increased resource estimates as further drilling is conducted.
In alignment with its commitment to adhere to the project timeline, CMR plans to finalize the resource estimate by September 2026, followed by the completion of a feasibility study and securing environmental approval by December 2026. With a robust operational strategy and positive drilling outcomes, CMR is poised to make a substantial impact on the copper mining landscape in Morocco.
