Al Wahda Dam: Morocco’s Water Security Strengthened as Capacity Nears Full

Significant Water Level Increase at Al Wahda Dam

Morocco’s Al Wahda Dam, the largest in the country, has recently reported a remarkable surge in its water levels, now reaching 88.73% of its capacity, which translates to over three billion cubic meters of water stored in its expansive reservoir. This impressive increase is especially timely as the nation prepares for the upcoming summer season, enhancing water security amidst rising temperatures.

The dam, strategically located in the Ouezzane Province, not only holds the title of Morocco's largest dam but also ranks among Africa's most significant hydraulic infrastructures. The latest statistics released by the Ministry of Equipment and Water highlight a dramatic recovery from this time last year, when the reservoir was only 58.27% full. This year’s uptick is attributed to a robust influx of water resulting from recent seasonal rainfall and elevated water levels in the Ouargha River.

Ensuring Water Supply and Agricultural Stability

Additional water contributions from neighboring dams, such as Bouhouda, Bab Louta, and Bab Ouender, have been instrumental in replenishing the reservoir, facilitating a rapid recovery from a challenging period of water scarcity experienced in late 2025. During that time, the dam’s filling rate plummeted to approximately 42% in September, sparking concerns regarding future water availability. However, with the arrival of abundant winter rains, the situation improved dramatically, enabling the dam to approach the critical 90% threshold by the end of January.

With a total storage capacity nearing 3.8 billion cubic meters, Al Wahda Dam is currently operating at a near-maximum level, which is crucial for mitigating potential water shortages as the hotter months approach. The dam plays a vital role in Morocco's comprehensive water management strategy, supplying potable water to local communities, ensuring irrigation for agricultural endeavors, and contributing to hydroelectric power generation. Furthermore, its function extends beyond economic and social aspects; it acts as a crucial defense mechanism against flooding in the Gharb Plain and surrounding regions. Its capacity to regulate water flows significantly reduces the risks associated with heavy rainfall and extreme weather phenomena.

As Morocco continues to grapple with the long-term effects of climate change and recurring drought cycles, the current status of Al Wahda Dam offers promising prospects for increased water supply stability and agricultural productivity in the coming months.
