Allegations of Sexual Violence Against Rabat Archbishop Spark Investigation

Serious Allegations Against Prominent Religious Figure

In a shocking turn of events, at least five women have come forward to accuse Cristobal Lopez Romero, the Archbishop of Rabat, Morocco, of sexual violence. This troubling revelation, reported by the Agence France-Presse (AFP), has initiated an official investigation by the Vatican, prompting the 74-year-old cardinal to step aside temporarily from his duties. While Romero vehemently denies the allegations, the accusations have raised significant concerns about accountability within the Church.

Details of the Allegations and Reactions

Among those speaking out is a retired woman actively involved in the Church, who has chosen to keep the details of her testimony confidential for the time being. Nevertheless, reports indicate that she has described recurring instances of sexual misconduct. Additionally, another woman has submitted a written account to the apostolic nunciature, the Vatican's diplomatic mission in Morocco, claiming that the cardinal engaged in inappropriate physical gestures. She described these as "particularly prolonged and emphatic hugs," which made her uncomfortable, as well as an alarming attempt at physical closeness that she interpreted as an unwanted advance.

A source within the diocese has disclosed that at least three other women have reported experiencing similar incidents, which were reportedly shared during confessional sessions. When approached for comment regarding these serious allegations, Archbishop Romero stated that he has "responded to his ecclesiastical superiors" and expressed his commitment to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. He maintains his innocence, asserting that he has neither committed aggression, nor violence, nor sexual harassment.
