Arrests Made in Marrakech Following Tourist Extortion Incident

Police Action Against Tourist Extortion in Marrakech

On Monday evening, law enforcement officers from the Old City Security in Marrakech apprehended an individual with a criminal history related to unauthorized tourist guiding, on suspicion of being involved in a case of extorting a foreign tourist and physically assaulting him. This swift police action was prompted by a video posted by the victim on social media, which detailed the incident. The tourist highlighted that he was coerced by a man who insisted on accompanying him and his friend during their tour of the historic city, an encounter that soon escalated into a physical confrontation.

According to the tourist's account, the suspect had taken it upon himself to guide them to several tourist attractions. However, the experience was unsatisfactory, leading the duo to decide to terminate the tour and leave the area. In response, the suspect demanded a payment of 1,000 dirhams for his services. When the tourists refused to comply, a heated argument ensued, culminating in the suspect slapping the tourist while the latter recorded the incident with his phone.

Thanks to the diligent investigative efforts of the police, the suspect's identity was swiftly established, leading to his arrest in one of the alleyways of the Old City. He has since been placed under provisional detention as investigations continue, supervised by the relevant public prosecutor's office. This inquiry aims to uncover all circumstances surrounding the case and ascertain the criminal acts attributed to the suspect.
