A New Chapter in Austria-Morocco Relations
On Wednesday, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Austria's Foreign Minister from the NEOS party, and Nasser Bourita, the Moroccan Foreign Minister, convened in Vienna to sign a significant agreement that establishes a strategic dialogue between Austria and Morocco. While specific details regarding the contents of this agreement remain undisclosed, Minister Meinl-Reisinger described it as a pivotal step in nurturing an already exemplary partnership between the two nations.
Enhancing Economic and Security Cooperation
In her statements, Meinl-Reisinger emphasized the necessity of forging strong partnerships in this new global landscape to bolster security, economic opportunities, and cooperation in migration. She remarked, "With Morocco, we have an outstanding partnership. Today, we deepen our collaboration with a commitment to strategic dialogue." Bourita echoed her sentiments, noting that even when countries are geographically distant, a robust understanding can yield beneficial results for their populations and the broader region.
Morocco stands as Austria's third most important export market in Africa, and recent trends highlight a growing economic relationship. According to the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, exports to Morocco surged by 16 percent in 2024, countering global trends, with the first half of 2025 showing an impressive increase of approximately 23 percent compared to the same period the previous year. This growing interest from Austrian exporters in the Moroccan market reflects a promising economic future.
However, the partnership extends beyond economic interests; it also encompasses shared commitments to promote security and stability while combating irregular migration. "We value our cooperation with Morocco in this area," Meinl-Reisinger stated, recognizing that developments in Africa have direct implications for Austria's security and economic interests. The two countries had previously signed a declaration of intent in February 2023, which focused on collaboration in trade and the fight against irregular migration, followed by a state treaty in September 2024 concerning the transfer of convicted individuals.
Austria and Morocco have maintained diplomatic relations for over 240 years, dating back to 1783 when Emperor Joseph II and Moroccan ambassador Mohamed bin Abdelmalik signed a friendship treaty in Vienna. Meinl-Reisinger reflected on this historical bond, stating, "At that time, we established a treaty for trade and peace. What could be more fitting in an era of global instability than to reflect on what is truly essential?" Bourita reiterated that the bilateral relations between the two countries are founded on shared values and interests.
