Benin's Commitment to Morocco's Sovereignty
On Tuesday, the government of Benin publicly reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, emphasizing its sovereignty over all regions, including the contentious Sahara area. This declaration was made during the conclusion of the seventh session of the Morocco-Benin Joint Cooperation Commission, which took place in Cotonou and was co-chaired by Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, alongside Benin's Minister of Foreign Affairs responsible for the Integration of Afro-descendants, Corinne Amori Brunet. In the joint communiqué released after the session, Benin reiterated its endorsement of Morocco's autonomy plan, highlighting it as the only realistic and credible resolution to the ongoing dispute.
Strategic Diplomatic Moves
During this session, Amori Brunet expressed her approval of the recent adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which recognizes the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as a foundation for a just, lasting, and mutually agreeable resolution to the territorial dispute. Furthermore, she indicated plans to strengthen diplomatic ties by advocating for a Beninese consular presence in the city of Laâyoune, situated within the Sahara. This move is part of a broader review of Benin's diplomatic and consular network. Additionally, she announced her intent to visit the city of Dakhla soon, to witness firsthand the region's economic and social development and to explore potential partnership opportunities that could enhance cooperation between the two nations.
