Brave U.S. Soldiers Go Missing in Morocco During Training Exercise

Tragic Incident Off the Coast of Morocco

Over the weekend, a somber incident unfolded off the coast of Morocco involving two U.S. Army soldiers who were reported missing during a multinational military training exercise known as African Lion. The soldiers disappeared on Saturday night near the Cap Draa Training Area, which is situated close to the coastal city of Tan-Tan. According to a U.S. defense official, the last sighting of the soldiers was near ocean cliffs in the training area, prompting an immediate search operation by both U.S. and Moroccan personnel when they failed to return. Initial assessments suggest that the two soldiers may have accidentally fallen into the ocean, and authorities have indicated that there is no evidence to suggest that foul play was involved.

As the situation unfolded, it was reported that the first soldier fell into the water, leading nearby comrades to attempt a rescue by forming a human chain with their belts; unfortunately, this effort was unsuccessful. In a courageous yet perilous move, another soldier, who reportedly did not know how to swim, jumped into the ocean to save his fellow service member but was subsequently overwhelmed by a wave. A third soldier also entered the water in a desperate attempt to rescue both individuals but ultimately returned to shore alone, unable to help.

Ongoing Search and Investigation

The U.S. Africa Command confirmed the disappearance of the soldiers on Sunday, emphasizing that the investigation is still active and that the well-being of the service members and their families remains the top priority. The search operation is extensive and includes ground teams, aerial assets, and maritime forces from both the Moroccan and U.S. Armed Forces, along with other participants of the African Lion exercise. Military resources deployed in the search include Moroccan SA-330 Puma and AS332 Super Puma helicopters, a U.S. CH-47 Chinook, unmanned aerial systems from both nations, a U.S. logistics support vessel, and a Moroccan Navy frigate, along with specialized teams of Moroccan mountaineers and divers.

This incident occurred during the final week of the African Lion training exercise, which is set to run from April 20 to May 8 in 2026. This year's event marks the 22nd iteration of the exercise, which is designed to enhance joint operations, crisis response capabilities, and interoperability among the diverse multinational forces participating. The training includes a variety of exercises such as armed live-fire drills, international academic exercises, explosives training, and humanitarian support operations.
