CAF President Defends Against Corruption Claims Following Senegal's Title Withdrawal

CAF President Addresses Controversy Surrounding Senegal's Africa Cup Title

Patrice Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has strongly defended the integrity of the organization in light of the recent decision to revoke Senegal's Africa Cup title. In a video message posted on the CAF's official website, he asserted, "No country in Africa will be favored or treated more favorably than another on the continent." He emphasized that the CAF is taking the incidents that unfolded during the final match in Morocco "very, very seriously." The controversy erupted following a penalty call late in the game, which led to chaos both on the field and in the stands. In a dramatic protest, the Senegalese team almost completely left the pitch, only returning later to finish the match. Ultimately, the CAF appeals court annulled Senegal's victory over Morocco (1-0 after extra time) and awarded the title to the tournament hosts, Morocco.

In response to the ruling, the Senegalese government has called for corruption investigations against the CAF and announced plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Motsepe acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, "We will respect the decision made at the highest level." He described the events surrounding the January final as a setback for African football, asserting, "What happened in this final undermines the good work that CAF has done over many years to ensure integrity, respect, ethical standards, good governance, and the credibility of our football matches' outcomes." Motsepe pointed out that ongoing suspicions of corruption stem from deep-rooted issues that have persisted for many years, which the organization continues to confront as they are critical for the future of the sport.

The appeals court justified its decision based on Article 82 of the Africa Cup regulations, which stated that Senegal's team forfeited the match by leaving the field. Consequently, under Article 84, the result was deemed a 3-0 victory for Morocco.
