CAF Takes Bold Action Against Senegal's AFCON Title
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made a significant announcement regarding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that has sent shockwaves throughout the football community. In a decision made public on March 17, 2026, CAF's Appeals Committee declared that the Senegalese national team would lose its championship title, thus recognizing Morocco as the rightful winner of the tournament with a final score of 3-0.
This ruling follows a thorough investigation into the conduct of the Senegalese team, which was found to have breached Article 82 of the AFCON regulations. According to the statement released by CAF, the Senegalese Football Federation's actions were deemed inappropriate, prompting the committee to apply Article 84, which led to Senegal's designation as the loser of the final match.
The decision was made after accepting an appeal from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation concerning the enforcement of the aforementioned regulations. In a related matter, the committee partially accepted Morocco's appeal regarding player Ismail Sabiri, reducing his suspension from an indefinite ban to two official matches, while also suspending a third match conditionally. Furthermore, the fine imposed on him, which was initially set at $100,000, was annulled.
Additionally, the committee reviewed a separate incident involving the Moroccan ball boys, attributing some responsibility to the Moroccan federation but reducing their fine to $50,000. However, the appeal related to the circumstances surrounding the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was dismissed, and the original $100,000 fine was upheld. An appeal concerning a "laser" incident was accepted partially, resulting in a reduced fine of $10,000.
This latest development comes after CAF imposed stringent penalties on both Senegal and Morocco following the tumultuous final match that took place in Rabat on January 18, 2026. The match was marred by controversy, particularly due to a penalty awarded to Morocco late in the game, which followed the annulment of a Senegalese goal. The tension escalated to the point that several Senegalese players briefly left the field before returning, culminating in Senegal's victory as they scored in extra time.
The cumulative financial penalties levied against Senegal exceeded $700,000, while Morocco faced fines totaling more than $400,000. This decisive ruling not only alters the historical records of the AFCON tournament but also raises questions about the integrity and regulation enforcement within African football competitions.
