CAF's Verdict on Morocco vs Senegal: A Diplomatic Endeavor

Patrice Motsepe Addresses Controversy Surrounding CAN Final

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has recently undertaken an official visit to Dakar and Rabat as he seeks to address the contentious situation regarding the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) final, which saw Morocco awarded the title despite Senegal’s victory in extra time on January 18th. In light of the backlash that followed this decision, Motsepe's diplomatic mission aims to ease tensions between the two nations.

During his visit to Dakar, Motsepe treaded carefully as he spoke to the media, stating, "The events and disputes are now in the hands of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). We will respect their decision. The issues are behind us, and we will comply with their ruling." His statements reflect his position since taking the helm of CAF in March 2021, emphasizing a commitment to fairness and transparency.

Motsepe further assured that CAF has initiated changes to align more closely with best practices to improve the integrity of the game and prevent similar situations from arising in the future. He remarked, "We guarantee the integrity of our competitions. African football must be competitive and respected." He also emphasized the importance of treating all countries equally, stating, "No country will be treated differently from another. This is a fundamental principle for us. We must also encourage referees to give their best." Motsepe is keen on fostering unity between Morocco and Senegal, acknowledging a rich history that binds the two nations.

Exemplary Sanctions and Future Directions

Despite his efforts to convey a message of reconciliation, Motsepe’s comments indicate an underlying discomfort with the current situation. He expressed great respect for the emotions of fans in both Senegal and Morocco, noting, "I awarded the gold medal to Sadio Mané, but I must adhere to the law and regulations. The decisions were made by the competent authorities, and I cannot act outside the legal framework." His balancing act continued in Rabat, where he praised Morocco's successful hosting of CAN 2025 while accepting the recent CAF ruling in favor of the Atlas Lions.

Motsepe articulated, "The CAN regulations are based on those of FIFA, representing a standard of global excellence. However, it is now clear that they must be revised. Sanctions for regulatory violations must be exemplary. Our commitment to the rules is absolute. African football must be respected and remain globally competitive." As the football community awaits the CAS's final decision in the coming weeks, the hope is that a resolution will bring closure to this controversy.
