Casablanca's Initiative to Tackle Abandoned Vehicles
The Casablanca Municipality is poised to implement a new decision aimed at regulating the management of abandoned or neglected vehicles within the city's jurisdiction. This initiative is designed to maintain public order and enhance the urban landscape of Morocco's economic capital. Vehicles classified as abandoned are those that have been parked indefinitely on public land, particularly those visibly unused, which detracts from the city's aesthetic and disrupts traffic flow.
According to municipal sources, the presence of these vehicles on the streets poses risks that extend beyond aesthetic concerns. They can become hotspots for illegal activities and accumulate waste and vermin, thereby threatening the safety and well-being of residents. Recognizing these dangers, the municipality has entrusted the task of identifying abandoned vehicles to sworn inspectors from the municipal police, who will work in close coordination with local authorities. Each case will be documented officially, including a precise description of the vehicle's condition, its location, type, and registration number to ensure proper legal documentation.
The legal procedure involves affixing an official notice to the abandoned vehicle, signed by the head of the relevant district council. This notice provides the vehicle owner with a legal grace period of no less than seven days as a final opportunity to remove the vehicle from public property before enforcement actions are taken. If the stipulated period passes without any response from the vehicle owner, local authorities, in conjunction with security services, will intervene to tow the vehicle to a municipal impound lot. This measure is considered an executive step to clear public squares and roadways of obstructions.
Furthermore, sources indicate that the vehicle owners will be solely responsible for the consequences of their neglect. Consequently, owners of towed vehicles will incur all costs associated with towing and storage, in addition to any fines that may result from this process. This initiative is expected to contribute significantly to enhancing the urban environment in Casablanca, ensuring a cleaner and more organized city for its inhabitants.
