Celebrating a Decade of Transformation: Jidar Street Art Festival in Rabat

The Evolution of Jidar Street Art Festival in Rabat

The Jidar Street Art Festival in Rabat is marking a significant milestone this year, celebrating ten years of transformative murals and artistic expression. Since its inception in 2015, the festival has evolved into a vibrant platform for artists, showcasing the dynamic nature of urban art while contributing to the cultural landscape of Morocco’s capital. To commemorate this decade-long journey, the festival is introducing the inaugural Jidar Grand Prix (GPJ), a groundbreaking initiative that invites the public to participate in selecting the most impactful mural from the previous edition, promising to foster community engagement and appreciation for street art.

From now until April 16, 2026, audiences are encouraged to act as jurors by voting for their favorite piece through a dedicated platform, marking a significant step in making the festival more inclusive and participatory. The initiative not only highlights the artistic talents showcased during the festival but also aims to establish an annual tradition that extends the festival's influence beyond its usual ten-day duration. With Rabat now boasting over a hundred murals, the city has successfully transformed into an open-air gallery, changing the perception of urban art from a fringe activity to a respected form of expression embraced by both locals and tourists alike.

A Cultural Renaissance in Rabat

The festival has played a crucial role in democratizing art in Rabat, as evidenced by its journey from its modest beginnings focused on graffiti and hip-hop culture to its current stature. Artistic director Salah Malouli and co-director Hicham Bahou emphasize the festival's commitment to diversifying its program, collaborating with cultural institutions such as the National School of Architecture and the Mohammed VI Museum of Contemporary Art. This collaboration underscores the festival's ambition to support a new generation of muralists and street artists, inviting various artistic disciplines to engage with the public.

Over the years, Jidar has faced challenges, including postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which tested the resilience of the festival. However, the festival's commitment to innovation remained steadfast, evolving its branding and expanding its artistic offerings to include international collaborations and a focus on abstract and hyper-realistic art. The introduction of workshops and collective murals has further enriched the local artistic community, allowing emerging talent to flourish and gain exposure on an international stage.

As the 11th edition approaches, set to run from April 16 to 27, 2026, the festival promises to continue its mission of nurturing new artists while reinforcing Rabat’s status as a cultural hub. The upcoming event will feature the collective mural project, guided by renowned artist Bakr, ensuring that the legacy of Jidar not only persists but also evolves in the collective memory of the city.
