International Conference in Fes Commemorates the Legacy of Ibn Rushd
The city of Fes is set to host a significant international conference on May 14 and 15, 2023, themed "Ibn Rushd: The Physician and Philosopher." This event marks the 900th anniversary of the birth of the illustrious Andalusian philosopher and physician, Ibn Rushd, who has left an indelible mark on human thought and philosophy.
This scientific gathering is organized by the ALECSO Chair for the History of Medicine, in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry in Fes, as well as the Research Foundation for Philosophy and Sciences in Islamic Contexts, in partnership with the Heritage Committee. The conference aims to revisit the works of Ibn Rushd, emphasizing the integration of his medical and philosophical dimensions, with participation from a distinguished group of researchers and academics from Morocco, Tunisia, Spain, and the United States.
The conference will kick off with an opening lecture delivered by Dr. Fouad Ben Ahmed from Al Quaraouiyine University, titled "Ibn Rushd: The Philosopher and Physician - Context, Text, and Reception," featuring contributions from researchers affiliated with the Tunisian Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters, as well as Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah University.
The scientific program of the conference will include multiple sessions addressing various epistemological and scientific issues, such as "Ibn Rushd's Medical Knowledge Between the History of Medicine and the Philosophy of Science," "Ibn Rushd's Stance on Astrology, the Cosmos, and Medicine," and "The Question of Reforming Astronomy." Moreover, discussions will explore the relationship between philosophy and theology, as well as the dialectics of reason and revelation.
Additionally, the conference will feature presentations on Ibn Rushd's intellectual policies during the Almohad period and an examination of the practical aspects of his medical practice, with the participation of experts from prestigious international institutions, including the University of Barcelona, the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the National Research Center in Madrid.
