Challenges Faced by Dental Students in Fes Due to Limited Resources

The dental students at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy at Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fes are currently grappling with significant difficulties in completing their clinical training. These challenges stem primarily from the inadequate resources available within the Omar Idrissi University Hospital, notably concerning the limited number of treatment chairs accessible for use. As a result, students are expressing their dissatisfaction with the temporary training space designated for their clinical practice, which is ill-prepared to accommodate both students and patients alike. During a recent field visit to this facility, they observed numerous deficiencies, including deteriorating infrastructure characterized by broken doors, damaged glass, and outdated equipment that does not meet the standards expected of a university setting aimed at clinical training.

The Student Office of the Dental Faculty in Fes has issued a statement highlighting the insufficient capacity of this space. Initially, it was anticipated that between 10 and 13 treatment chairs would be available for the benefit of 57 students. However, findings from their visit, corroborated by testimonies from some staff members, indicate that the actual number may not exceed five chairs. This stark reality raises significant challenges in ensuring comprehensive practical training for the students.

The students assert that this acute shortage of treatment chairs directly impedes their ability to acquire essential clinical skills, raising serious questions about the capability of this facility to meet academic training requirements. This situation is further exacerbated by the absence of any concrete indicators regarding the startup of the permanent center for dental treatments (CCTD), which is envisioned to serve as the foundational support for future clinical training.

Furthermore, the Student Office in Fes has expressed concerns that the severity of this issue is likely to escalate, especially with expectations of increasing student enrollment in the coming years. Future cohorts are projected to include larger numbers of students, presenting a real challenge regarding how to accommodate everyone while ensuring equitable training opportunities.

In light of these findings, the Student Office has called upon the relevant authorities to provide official clarifications regarding the actual number of treatment chairs that will be made available, the timeline for upgrading the current facility, as well as the status of the permanent center project and proposed solutions to address the growing student population.

The office has reiterated its readiness to engage in a serious and responsible dialogue with the pertinent authorities aimed at finding practical solutions that ensure the continuity and quality of clinical training. They emphasize that the training of competent dentists is contingent upon providing suitable training conditions that also safeguard patient safety.
