Strengthening Ties Between Chile and Morocco
The Chile-Morocco Parliamentary Friendship Group, led by María Catalina Del Real Mihovilovic, reaffirmed its unwavering support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797 regarding the Moroccan Sahara during a recent meeting in Rabat. This resolution is crucial as it recognizes Morocco’s autonomy plan as a "lasting and serious solution" to the ongoing dispute concerning the region. Following her discussions with Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, Del Real Mihovilovic emphasized the group's commitment, which encompasses representatives from various political parties in Chile.
Highlighting the strategic importance of Morocco, she remarked that it serves as a vital gateway for Chile into Africa. In reciprocation, she expressed aspirations for Chile to act as a conduit for Morocco to access Latin America and the Pacific. This mutual interest extends beyond mere diplomatic relations, as both nations see immense potential for economic collaboration, particularly in agriculture. Del Real Mihovilovic pointed out the significance of Moroccan fertilizers to Chilean agriculture, while noting that Chile's exports of essential minerals, including copper and lithium, are increasingly vital to Morocco's growing automotive industry.
Pathway to Strategic Partnerships
The Chilean delegation underscored the importance of establishing robust partnerships with Morocco in various fields, including technology, tourism, and seawater desalination. Del Real Mihovilovic also reflected on the timing of their visit, marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, alongside the 22nd anniversary of King Mohammed VI's historic visit to Chile. She reiterated that their foreign policy towards Morocco is a matter of state, transcending political affiliations and underscoring a deep-seated friendship between the two countries.
