Outrage Over Disturbing Content Leads to Arrest
The Moroccan influencer, known as Ibn Nasnas, has once again become embroiled in controversy after sharing a video that sparked significant outrage among animal rights organizations in neighboring countries. This content creator first gained notoriety in Spain last summer when he swam to the Spanish archipelago of Chafarinas and filmed his exploration of the area. Currently, Ibn Nasnas is incarcerated in Morocco, but his detention is not related to his illegal entry into Spanish territory. At the end of May, he uploaded a shocking video on his channel, where he was seen cooking and consuming a stray dog on the same day Muslims observe the sacred Feast of Sacrifice, known as Eid al-Adha. The graphic nature of the footage ignited a firestorm of criticism, leading to an outpouring of condemnation in the comments section of YouTube.
In response to the uproar, various animal rights associations in Morocco took action by filing a formal complaint with local authorities. They demanded an investigation into the incident and the implementation of appropriate measures. The justice system responded to their calls; Ibn Nasnas was arrested last week and is now awaiting trial. This incident has further highlighted the troubling situation of stray dogs in Morocco, which has been a topic of heated debate in recent months. This controversy has been exacerbated by a campaign of roundups, captures, and mass euthanasia of stray animals in preparation for the 2030 World Cup, particularly in tourist-heavy cities. A report published earlier this year by The Athletic revealed the existence of a so-called 'sacrifice center' on the outskirts of Marrakech, part of the local authorities' strategies to manage stray animal populations as Morocco positions itself to host large-scale sporting events.
Changing Narratives and Continued Controversy
In the now-deleted video that spurred the outrage, Ibn Nasnas was filmed retrieving a dead dog from the street, cooking it, and consuming it. He claimed that the rising prices of lamb meat due to Eid was his motivation for this shocking act. Following the backlash, he replaced the controversial video with another recording on his channel, where he asserts that he did not kill the animal, refuting accusations made against him on social media. In this new video, he shares a message expressing that while there are pure-hearted individuals in Morocco, many others are consumed by envy. He lamented that he has done all he can and now only awaits his fate in prison.
Ibn Nasnas is well-known in Morocco for his risky and controversial content. His notoriety in Spain peaked when he successfully infiltrated Chafarinas Islands, a Spanish archipelago located about 3.5 kilometers from Moroccan shores, which is restricted to Spanish military personnel, guards, and scientists. He swam to King Francisco Island, where he filmed himself wandering through a cemetery where 197 individuals are buried. Following this incident, the Spanish Ministry of Defense launched an investigation to determine how he managed to gain access to Spanish territory so easily. Other controversial videos by Ibn Nasnas include footage of him consuming abandoned chickens at alleged witchcraft ritual sites and even depicting himself being buried alive. However, none have sparked as much outrage as the video that has now led him to face legal proceedings in Morocco, earning him widespread criticism both online and offline.
