Controversy Arises at Morocco vs. France Press Conference Ahead of World Cup Quarterfinal

In the lead-up to the highly anticipated quarterfinal match between Morocco and France at the 2026 World Cup, the final press conference took an unexpected turn, marked by a heated altercation between journalists while Moroccan star player Ibrahim Diaz was speaking. The incident unfolded when two journalists, seated at the back of the room, began to argue loudly, interrupting Diaz as he addressed the media.

A video capturing the incident revealed one journalist aggressively questioning his colleague, exclaiming, "Why are you hitting me? You have no right to hit me!" This dramatic scene unfolded in front of Diaz, who appeared taken aback by the commotion. As the tension escalated, a member of the organizing committee intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. During this intervention, one journalist reiterated his claim of being hit, while the other responded by asserting, "Because you raised your hand twice in front of the camera." In a moment of levity, as the press conference resumed, Diaz burst into laughter, clearly surprised by the unexpected turn of events, according to the French newspaper Le Parisien.

As the background noise settled, a voice was heard saying, "This is like something out of school; we need to separate you two," followed by a plea for calm, "It's okay, it's okay. Friends, please." With the atmosphere lightening, the press conference continued without further incident.

Didier Deschamps Faces Criticism

On the other side of the dais, French head coach Didier Deschamps faced sharp criticism from Moroccan journalists who protested against their lack of opportunity to ask questions during the French national team’s press conference. This discontent led to a verbal exchange between Deschamps and the journalists, culminating in the French coach reluctantly agreeing to take one additional question, as reported by Brazilian network ge.globo.

Deschamps adhered to FIFA protocol, addressing the press for 20 minutes, but the French Football Federation's media office prioritized local journalists, much to the dismay of their Moroccan counterparts. After taking his seat again, Deschamps remarked, "I apologize, I have a long way back to the hotel, I need to have lunch with my players and prepare for training. I came out very early and have many tasks ahead." He further explained, "How many of you are here? If 50 people raise their hands, I can't answer 50 questions. But okay, please go ahead with another question." A Moroccan journalist then inquired about the relaxed demeanor of the players during their training, displayed in a video shared on social media.

Deschamps responded, "I don't know if you mean we are celebrating; that's not the case. We respect the Moroccan team, but there is only one spot available in the semifinals for each team." He concluded with, "We won’t be publishing images of players crying; I can imagine some might be upset, just as Morocco wouldn’t want to publish such images either. We do not wish to offend anyone."
