Controversy Erupts Over Jewish Prayers at Bab Doukkala in Marrakech

Debate Surrounds Religious Gathering

A recent video showcasing a group of Jews praying at the historic Bab Doukkala in Marrakech has sparked significant controversy on social media platforms. The footage depicts several individuals in traditional religious attire performing prayers near the iconic wall, leading to varied interpretations from observers. Some speculate that this gathering may symbolize an attempt to establish a new ‘Wailing Wall’ at the site, which has intensified discussions surrounding religious expression and political implications in Morocco.

Amidst the heated debate, Jacky Kadoch, the leader of the Jewish community in the Marrakech-Safi region, stepped forward to clarify the situation. He explained that the individuals involved were foreign Jews belonging to the Haredi community, who were present in Morocco for religious tours aimed at visiting notable shrines and historical sites. Kadoch emphasized that their prayers were spontaneous, coinciding with their visit, and firmly denied any political motivations behind the gathering, mentioning that there were no accessible synagogues in the vicinity.

Response and Protests Emerge

The incident prompted a swift response from local Moroccans. On the same day, a group of young individuals visited Bab Doukkala to clean the area, expressing their dissatisfaction with what they deemed a “desecration” of the site. Furthermore, a protest organized by the local front for supporting Palestine took place later, drawing dozens of participants who raised Palestinian flags and condemned the event. The protestors argued that the prayers were not merely a religious act but rather a provocative gesture with normalization implications, challenging the symbolic significance of Moroccan historical sites.

Abdelilah Benkirane, the Secretary-General of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), responded to the unfolding events with caution, stating he lacked sufficient information to make a definitive judgment. He acknowledged that Jews have historically been an integral part of Moroccan society and affirmed that matters related to religious practices should be managed by official institutions, particularly the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs and the Royal Institution.
