Czech Republic Endorses Moroccan Sovereignty Over Sahara
During a significant diplomatic engagement in Rabat, the Czech Republic has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a genuine autonomy plan for the Sahara region under Moroccan sovereignty. This stance was articulated in a joint declaration following discussions between Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister, and Jan Lipavský, the Czech Foreign Minister, who was visiting Morocco for the first time in an official capacity. The declaration emphasizes that the autonomy plan is recognized as the most viable solution to the ongoing dispute regarding the Sahara, a region that has seen prolonged contention.
The Czech ambassador to Morocco is set to undertake a visit to the Sahara region, aimed at laying the groundwork for future business delegations and fostering joint economic initiatives. In a related move, the Czech Republic plans to expand its consular services to include the Sahara, thereby aligning its diplomatic, economic, and consular strategies with its stated position on the matter.
Moreover, the Czech Republic has welcomed the recent adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which underscores Morocco’s autonomy proposal from 2007 as a serious, credible, and realistic foundation for a lasting political resolution that is acceptable to all stakeholders involved. Both ministers reiterated their support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General’s personal envoy to the Sahara, aimed at advancing the political process toward a definitive resolution of the regional dispute.
