Dar America Transitions to a New Chapter: Celebrating Cultural Exchange

Dar America Closes Its Current Location, Embracing a New Future

In a poignant farewell, Dar America held its closing ceremony yesterday, marking the end of an era at its long-established location in Casablanca. This historic event precedes the official closure of the center, set for this Friday, but it also heralds an exciting new beginning. Starting May 5, Dar America will relocate to the Casablanca Finance City (CFC), where it aims to further enhance Moroccan-American cultural exchanges and community engagement.

Situated in the vibrant Gauthier neighborhood of Casablanca, the current building has been a witness to countless memories over its five-decade history. Since its inception, Dar America has served as a cultural hub, welcoming generations through a variety of programs that promote understanding and connection among diverse communities. The closing ceremony brought together alumni, community leaders, educators, and former staff, all gathered to celebrate the center's invaluable contribution to Moroccan-American relations and to honor its legacy.

Over the years, Dar America has transformed from its original role as a residence for US consular officials in the 1940s to a vital space for cultural exchange, educational support, and STEM initiatives. Marissa Scott, the US Consul General, expressed her sentiments during the ceremony, stating, "This is a poignant time for us because it is the end of an era, but it’s also the beginning of something beautiful. Know that Morocco and the US already share extensive relations, almost 250 years." She emphasized the significance of this moment in light of the center’s recent 50th anniversary, reflecting on the joy and memories created within its walls.

A Bright Future Ahead

The relocation to Casablanca Finance City represents a significant milestone for Dar America. Although the physical space is changing, the center's mission remains steadfast. E. Rose Custis, the Director of Dar America, highlighted this continuity, stating, "It’s been a real privilege to share America with people who love the United States as much as I do. I hope everyone who walked through Dar America’s doors will visit us at our new location in Casa Finance City soon." The new facility will build upon the foundation established by the previous site, offering enhanced resources, modern amenities, and an expanded range of programming designed to promote American culture, values, and educational exchange.

The closing ceremony was particularly emotional for many attendees, particularly those who view Dar America as a second home. Yahya Echattoui, a teacher and alumnus of the International Visitor Leadership Program, reflected on the profound influence the center has had on his life and career. He expressed gratitude for the opportunities and experiences he gained at Dar America, stating, "I couldn’t do this without my experience with Dar America when I was a university student. Attending events and creating memories at this dar has shaped my journey in education and beyond." He concluded by encouraging others to embrace the new venue and create their own memories there.
