In a concerning development during the African Lion 2026 military exercise, which commenced on April 27 and involves approximately 5,000 personnel from over 40 countries, two American soldiers have been reported missing. Their disappearance occurred on May 2, 2026, near a cliff at Cap Draa, situated in the Tan-Tan region of southern Morocco. As per the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco (FAR), extensive rescue operations are currently underway to locate the missing servicemen.

The Moroccan Armed Forces have mobilized significant resources, including land, air, and maritime units, in collaboration with U.S. forces and other participating nations. The FAR stated, "The Moroccan, American, and other allied forces involved in the exercise rapidly commenced coordinated search and rescue operations utilizing various assets to locate the missing soldiers." In addition, the United States Africa Command (Africom) has opened an investigation into the incident, ruling out any terrorist links as per reports from Moroccan media.

The African Lion 2026 exercise, notable for its scale and diversity, aims to enhance regional security cooperation through a series of land, air, and maritime maneuvers, with a focus on drones, cybersecurity, and interoperability among nations. This year's edition marks one of the largest military exercises on the continent, co-hosted by the United States and Morocco, and is expected to conclude on May 8, 2026.
