Düsseldorf Police Responds to Large Gathering of Football Fans After Morocco vs. Brazil Match

Massive Police Operation in Oberbilk Following Football Celebration

In the early hours of Sunday, June 14th, a significant police operation took place in the Oberbilk district of Düsseldorf, prompted by a large gathering of what appeared to be football fans celebrating loudly in the streets. According to a statement from the police, "Several hundred individuals celebrated exuberantly, igniting pyrotechnics and firecrackers during the festivities." In light of the disturbances, police officers prepared multiple reports for legal action.

Traffic Disruptions and Police Response

Starting around 2:20 AM, shortly after the conclusion of the World Cup match between Morocco and Brazil, which ended in a 1-1 draw, the Düsseldorf police control center received numerous emergency calls. Reporters indicated that a large crowd was celebrating noisily in the Oberbilk area. Upon arrival, police observed up to 400 individuals congregating on Ellerstraße, where they were evidently celebrating the football match result with fireworks and firecrackers. At one point, as many as 100 vehicles blocked the Ellerstraße, causing a temporary halt to traffic in the area. "Several patrol teams and the priority response unit managed to disperse the crowd, occasionally employing physical force (pushing against disruptors)," the police reported on Sunday.

Despite the overall peaceful nature of the celebrations, there were isolated incidents of firecrackers being thrown towards the police, although no injuries were reported. In one instance, a young female suspect was identified and was subsequently handed over to her guardians on-site. Upon returning to a nearby parked patrol car, the officers discovered that the rear license plate had been damaged, indicating that it had been deliberately broken from its holder.

Similar celebrations were observed during the Winter World Cup in 2022, when Morocco made a sensational run to the semifinals, with crowds celebrating peacefully in a motorcade and in the so-called Maghreb quarter, using pyrotechnics and firecrackers.
