Düsseldorf's Wild Celebrations After Morocco's Draw with Brazil

Police Respond to Unruly Celebrations Following Morocco's Match

In Düsseldorf, the atmosphere was electrifying following the exciting 1-1 draw between Morocco and Brazil during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, igniting a fervent celebration among fans in Oberbilk, a neighborhood known for its large Moroccan community. The festivities, however, quickly escalated into chaos, prompting a significant police response in the early hours of Sunday morning. By approximately 2 AM, the Ellerstraße and surrounding streets were gridlocked with around 100 vehicles, as roughly 400 exuberant fans took to the roads to celebrate the momentous occasion, marking Morocco's impressive performance in the tournament.

The celebrations featured a substantial display of pyrotechnics, with fans setting off fireworks and firecrackers to express their joy over their national team's remarkable achievement. Unfortunately, the situation became difficult for law enforcement, who struggled to restore order and reopen the roads. A heavy police presence was deployed, including members of the special operations unit Prios, as numerous individuals reportedly refused to comply with officers' requests to clear the streets. In some instances, fans resisted police attempts to disperse them, leading to a tense standoff.

Despite the celebrations being largely peaceful, there were isolated incidents of firecrackers being thrown in the direction of the police. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during these confrontations. Authorities managed to identify a young girl as a suspect in one of the incidents; she was subsequently returned to her guardians. Additionally, upon returning to a parked police vehicle, officers discovered damage to the rear license plate, which appeared to have been intentionally removed from its holder.

By the end of the night, the police had filed three reports, which included charges of assault against police officers and violations of the explosives law, the latter relating to the use of fireworks during the celebrations. This incident highlights the passionate spirit of Moroccan fans and the challenges that can arise during such jubilant public displays.
