Ecuador Strengthens Ties with Morocco: Key Discussions on Trade and Cooperation

Ecuador and Morocco: A Growing Partnership

The Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility has announced that Minister Sommerfeld held a significant meeting in Rabat with her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita. During this meeting, they delved into various priority topics, including trade, agriculture, infrastructure, and energy. Both parties emphasized the positive state of bilateral relations, highlighted by the active participation of businesses from both nations and the emergence of new opportunities for both the public and private sectors.

Minister Sommerfeld expressed Ecuador's keen interest in enhancing its export offerings to Morocco, which she views as a gateway to African markets. She pointed out that the economies of Ecuador and Morocco are complementary, underscoring the potential for collaboration in agro-industry, fertilizers, value-added products, and logistics. These discussions reflect a mutual desire to deepen economic ties and explore new avenues for cooperation.

Broader Cooperation and Future Prospects

During the agenda, authorities also discussed the anticipated opening of the Moroccan embassy in Quito and the potential official visit from President Daniel Noboa. Additionally, they engaged in dialogue regarding cooperation in security and the fight against transnational organized crime, recognizing the importance of a collaborative approach in these areas.

On the commercial front, Minister Sommerfeld met with Morocco's Minister of Industry and Commerce, Ryad Mezzour, to review the progress of a memorandum of understanding that is nearing completion. As part of her visit, the minister presided over a business meeting between Ecuadorian exporters and the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises, fostering direct engagement between the two countries’ business communities.

Politically, bilateral relations have strengthened even further since Ecuador's government suspended its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in October 2024. Notably, on May 24 of the previous year, Bourita attended the inauguration ceremony of President Daniel Noboa for the 2025-2029 term, an event that was met with protests from various Ecuadorian social organizations. At that time, a joint statement from civil society groups accused Bourita of representing a regime characterized by severe, systematic, and ongoing human rights violations against both the Moroccan people and the Sahrawi people.
