Egypt Reaffirms Support for Morocco's Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

In a significant move underscoring the strengthening relations between Morocco and Egypt, Cairo has reiterated its unwavering support for Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara. This declaration came during the inaugural session of the Moroccan-Egyptian Coordination and Follow-up Committee, which convened to explore avenues for enhanced bilateral cooperation. The meeting, chaired by Moroccan Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch and Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, not only reaffirmed Egypt's position but also emphasized the endorsement of UN Security Council Resolution 2797. This pivotal resolution, adopted in October of the previous year, acknowledged Morocco's Autonomy Plan as a legitimate and viable pathway to resolve the long-standing dispute concerning Western Sahara.

During the opening remarks, Prime Minister Akhannouch articulated the shared vision of both nations, aiming to inject new life into their bilateral relations and elevate them to an exemplary strategic partnership. This ambition is reflected in a series of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements spanning various sectors, reinforcing the commitment to mutual growth and collaboration.

Expanding Areas of Cooperation

Among the key agreements reached, one notable MoU was established between the Moroccan Academy for Diplomatic Studies and the Egyptian Institute for Diplomatic Studies, designed to foster cooperation in training young diplomats. Additionally, the two nations have committed to enhancing partnerships in the sports sector, focusing on the exchange of scientific expertise and legislative improvements in sports sciences. The agreements also encompass vital areas such as housing and urban development, tourism, health care, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy, indicating a comprehensive approach to bilateral cooperation.

Furthermore, the meeting served as a platform for bilateral discussions, with Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita engaging in talks with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty. The discussions centered on fortifying the ties between the two nations and addressing various mutual interests. Akhannouch articulated the robust nature of the relationship, emphasizing that its strength is rooted in the clarity surrounding the strategic issues pertinent to both countries. He asserted that realizing this model of partnership necessitates a balanced enhancement of both the volume and value of bilateral interactions, coupled with the effective execution of free-trade agreements at both regional and continental levels.
