FAO's Third International Training Course on Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) successfully conducted its third International Training Course focused on the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF) from September 12 to September 30, 2011, at the Université Ibn Zohr in Agadir, Morocco. This extensive three-week program was a collaborative effort between the FAO and the Department of Sciences at Université Ibn Zohr, in conjunction with the Institut National de Recherche Halieutique (INRH) of Morocco. The course aimed to enhance the understanding and implementation of sustainable fisheries practices among participants from various nations.

During this significant training initiative, 38 participants representing 18 countries gathered to engage in comprehensive discussions and hands-on learning experiences. The attendees were funded through sponsorship from the EAF-Nansen project, the FAO COPEMED project, and INRH, highlighting the collaborative nature of international efforts towards sustainable fisheries management. The opening ceremony featured the President of UIZ and the Vice President of the Agadir Region, underscoring the importance of local leadership in fostering sustainable practices.

The course not only provided valuable insights into the principles of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries but also fostered international cooperation and knowledge exchange among fisheries professionals. Participants had the opportunity to explore various aspects of fisheries management and the vital role that an ecosystem-based approach plays in ensuring the sustainability of global fish stocks and aquatic ecosystems.
