Fes Conference Issues 'Fes Message' on Human Civilization and Artificial Intelligence

Fes Conference Concludes with a Call for Ethical AI Development

The international conference titled "The Future of Human Civilization in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" recently concluded at the Euro-Mediterranean University in Fes, Morocco, under the esteemed patronage of King Mohammed VI. This significant event culminated in the release of the "Fes Message on Human Civilization and Artificial Intelligence." Prominent figures, including Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Al-Issa, the Secretary-General of the Muslim World League and President of the Association of Muslim Scholars, served as the keynote speaker at the conference, which saw participation from global leaders, the UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, and esteemed academics and thinkers from 75 nations, drawing an audience of over 2,000 attendees.

In their concluding statement, the conference participants emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) holds immense potential to drive human progress, provided it is developed within a framework that upholds universal values, human dignity, and principles of equity. The necessity for effective governance of AI was highlighted, calling for adherence to principles such as transparency, accountability, responsibility, and interpretability to foster trust in intelligent systems.

Moreover, the participants acknowledged the pressing challenges posed by algorithmic biases and the quality of data, which underscore the urgent need for developing appropriate and adaptable international regulatory frameworks. They asserted that AI applications in health and other critical areas present promising opportunities, albeit with a strong emphasis on the protection of data and the assurance of scientific reliability.

To further bolster trust in AI systems, the conference called for the establishment of mechanisms for evaluation, auditing, and monitoring, ensuring a more integrated human dimension in the development of AI technologies. It was also underscored that AI serves as a strategic lever in international relations, necessitating enhanced multilateral cooperation to prevent technological imbalances and fragmentation that could disadvantage certain parties.

Additionally, the conference addressed the risks associated with cybersecurity threats, misinformation, and hate speech, urging the development of effective monitoring and response mechanisms. The participants encouraged the creation of AI models that take into account cultural and linguistic specificities, thereby enhancing digital sovereignty and ensuring equitable access to these technologies.

Investment in youth, human capital, and infrastructure was identified as a fundamental pillar for building a responsible and inclusive digital future. The conference concluded with a reaffirmation of the commitment to directing AI towards serving peace, sustainable development, and fostering closer ties among cultures and civilizations.

The conference featured four main sessions, covering topics such as "Questions of Transparency, Responsibility, and Trust: Foundations of Global Governance in the Age of AI," "Applications and Ethics of AI in Health," and "AI as an Opportunity to Revive Shared Human Values." Additionally, five parallel sessions addressed subjects like "Coexistence in the Age of AI," "AI Governance and Its Impact on Development," and "AI and Cybersecurity in a Postmodern Era." The event served as a significant platform for strategic dialogue on the profound transformations induced by artificial intelligence.
