Fes Prepares for the Fiercest Elections in 2026: A Heated Contest Looms

Political Landscape Heating Up Ahead of 2026 Elections in Fes

As the date for the upcoming legislative elections approaches, albeit still some time away, the political landscape in Fes, particularly in the northern and southern electoral districts, is already showcasing early signs of intense competition. Rapid political maneuvers are underway, with various candidates vying for their positions in what appears to be an open race with multiple possibilities. The two districts, which collectively house thousands of electoral votes, are competing for a total of eight parliamentary seats, heightening the stakes and making every alliance or electoral attraction significantly impactful on the final outcomes.

Among the traditional contenders, notable names include investor Aziz Labar, who is running in Fes South for the Authenticity and Modernity Party, as well as Dr. Allal Amraoui, the current parliamentary deputy from the Istiqlal Party. His colleague, Abdul Majid Al-Fassi Al-Fihri, is also contesting in Fes North, alongside current parliamentary deputy Tahami Wazani from the National Rally of Independents. Additionally, Khalid Al-Ajli, another sitting deputy from the same party, is reportedly preparing to enter the fray under the banner of the Popular Movement, despite a commendable political career thus far.

Conversely, new names are beginning to emerge in the political arena, indicating their intentions to join the competition. Among them are Mohammed Khayi, the head of the Justice and Development Party group in the Fes municipal council, who has announced his candidacy for Fes South; Zina Shaheem of the National Rally of Independents also in Fes South; Youssef Al-Hadi from the Constitutional Union; Ali Al-Qasab from the Progress and Socialism Party; and Yasser Jawhar and Mohsen Azmi from the Authenticity and Modernity Party, with other candidates still searching for endorsements from their respective parties or others.

The results of the 2021 elections revealed significant disparities among certain candidates. However, current preliminary data suggests that the 2026 elections may witness a more fierce and closely contested battle, potentially diminishing the margin of difference in votes among competitors. This is particularly relevant given the influx of new names and early political movements expected to reshape the balance of power within the two electoral districts.

As traditional figures clash with new faces, the northern and southern districts of Fes seem poised for one of the most thrilling electoral contests in the Fes-Meknes region. The upcoming weeks are likely to reveal further alliances and movements that could redraw the political map of this historic academic capital.
