Fes Youth Embrace Traditional Attire for Eid al-Fitr Celebration

Fes Youth Revive Traditional Fashion for Eid al-Fitr

The streets of Fes were alive with the vibrant spirit of Eid al-Fitr as a remarkable trend emerged among the youth: a renewed enthusiasm for traditional Moroccan attire. This festive season witnessed a significant surge in young people's interest in authentic Moroccan clothing, marking a strong return to cultural roots during religious celebrations. Amidst the joyful exchanges of greetings and well-wishes, the atmosphere was charged with a sense of brotherhood and community spirit that defines this special occasion.

Le360's cameras captured the bustling activity in the historic alleys of Fes, highlighting a notable commercial momentum as residents flocked to purchase their festive garments. Traditional clothing stores experienced an influx of customers eager to acquire essentials for the holiday, particularly the 'jellaba' and 'kandura,' alongside the iconic 'balgha' and the traditional Fassi fez. These garments not only reflect Moroccan identity but also infuse a sense of authenticity into the Eid celebrations, making them all the more special.

According to local merchant Mohamed Benani, this year saw an unprecedented increase in the younger demographic's demand for traditional clothing. He noted that the last ten days of Ramadan—the 'Awa'ish period—represent peak sales, offering a wide range of options in terms of quality and price. There has been a marked preference for high-quality jellabas at reasonable prices, catering to the tastes of the youth.

Abdel Ghani, a seller of traditional fezzes, explained that the Fassi fez has become an essential component of traditional attire, especially during festive occasions. He pointed out the variety of styles available, ranging from the 'hayat' fez, which is part of the official Moroccan dress, to the 'Hassani' fez, associated with the legacy of the late King Hassan II, historically linked to the resistance and liberation movements. Today, these styles are making a strong comeback among the youth.

Abdel Ilah, a trader in the old city, echoed the sentiment that the Eid atmosphere in Fes is unique, particularly within the ancient fabric of the city. The local community remains committed to upholding traditions by donning traditional clothing, purchasing 'balgha ziyan' slippers, jellabas, and caftans, and exchanging gifts, all of which add a deeply spiritual dimension to the celebration.

He further elaborated on the diverse offerings in the markets, particularly the various types of 'balgha,' especially the 'ziyan' known for its high quality among Fassi locals. The different colors and designs cater to a wide array of preferences. The last few years have seen a remarkable revival of interest in traditional attire after a period of decline, with the youth playing a pivotal role in revitalizing these customs.

This growing enthusiasm for traditional clothing among the youth of Fes on the eve of Eid al-Fitr serves as a testament to the dynamic nature of the old markets and the enduring presence of cultural heritage in the lives of Moroccans. These spaces transform into vibrant showcases of authenticity, blending the joy of celebration with pride in one's identity.
