Resurgence of Ibrahim Dias in the 2026 World Cup
Morristown, United States (AFP) – After a disappointing penalty miss in the chaotic final of the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, it seemed that Ibrahim Dias had lost his way. However, he finally regained his form during an impressive performance against Canada, where he played a pivotal role as a playmaker for the Moroccan national team, which is set to face France again in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup.
Despite being celebrated as the best player and top scorer (with five goals) in the Africa Cup of Nations held on home soil, Dias faced a barrage of criticism following his missed penalty against Senegal in January. This pressure proved challenging for him to navigate, as noted by fans of the "Atlas Lions". His offensive contributions during the first three matches of the World Cup were below expectations. Nevertheless, the 26-year-old midfielder enjoys the confidence of his coach, Mohamed Wahbi, who has consistently defended him in press conferences and retained him in the starting lineup.
Following Morocco's recent victory over Haiti (4-2) in the final group stage match, Wahbi praised Dias, stating, "He is a very talented player, a Real Madrid player, and will bring us a lot. He has already provided two crucial assists, and I expect more from him because he is one of my best players. We will give him the support and confidence he needs to be effective." Since June 11, Dias has shown a noticeable transformation in his performance. He has become less individualistic and more collaborative in midfield, managing to deliver four assists, making him the best African in World Cup history, with two assists against Canada in the Round of 16.
After qualifying for the next stage, Dias expressed his joy, saying, "I am very happy with everything I am doing to help my teammates." He emphasized, "The most important thing is what we achieve as a team," praising the "wonderful mentality" of the Atlas Lions.
Embracing His Moroccan Heritage
Like many of his teammates, Ibrahim Dias was born outside Morocco, specifically in the Spanish city of Malaga. He chose to represent his father's country only in 2023, after previously playing for 'La Roja'. He has no regrets about his decision. He shared, "Things are going really well. I am extremely happy with what I am achieving because I believe the support and love I have received from all of Morocco since my arrival have been amazing." He added, "To reflect that on the pitch and give my best is unique." While he may not yet have reached his peak performance, former international Abdelaziz Benij expressed hope to AFP that "Ibrahim Dias will quickly regain his brilliance: he excels more in defensive work than in the final touch, and perhaps that is the element we are still missing."
Another former international, Aziz Bouderbala, stated to AFP, "If Ibrahim Dias raises his level slightly, Morocco is capable of reaching the final and perhaps winning the title." Following Morocco's semi-final loss to France in the 2022 World Cup, Mohamed Wahbi has set his sights on this goal for the current tournament. He remarked after the Haiti match, "Morocco has entered a new era, one where we must believe in our ability to become world champions." Achieving this would be a monumental feat for a team that was crowned African champion through an administrative decision, which Senegal contested at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
