Intensive Search Continues for Missing American Soldiers in Morocco

Ongoing Search Efforts in Morocco for Two Missing American Soldiers

As of May 8, 2026, Moroccan and American military forces are engaged in a relentless search operation for two American soldiers who have been missing for six days in southern Morocco. The soldiers disappeared during the "African Lion" military exercises, an annual joint training operation involving multiple countries, including the United States. The incident occurred last Saturday around 20:00 GMT near a cliff in the Ras Drâa area of Tan-Tan, according to reports from the Moroccan military.

More than 600 personnel from the United States, Morocco, and other participating nations are actively involved in the search efforts. So far, the search has covered over 8,000 square kilometers of ocean and coastal areas, and it continues to expand as new resources are deployed. Notably, a U.S. Navy P-8 aircraft has significantly enhanced maritime search capabilities, while Moroccan divers, experts in cave exploration, have been conducting search operations in the nearby caves.

Details Surrounding the Incident

Reports indicate that the two soldiers were part of a group that ventured out to watch the sunset when one of them fell into the water. In an attempt to rescue him, his fellow soldiers formed a human chain using their belts, but unfortunately, their efforts were in vain. A second soldier jumped into the water to save the first, who was known to be a poor swimmer, but was immediately struck by a large wave, complicating the rescue. A third soldier also entered the water but was unable to save either of the two. Fortunately, he managed to return to shore safely.

The "African Lion" exercises, which began on April 27, 2026, are considered one of the largest military drills on the African continent. This year, the exercises involve participation from 41 nations and are set to conclude on May 8. The Moroccan military has mobilized significant land, air, and naval resources to locate the missing soldiers, including the Royal Navy divers who are searching caves along the cliff where the incident occurred.

U.S. military officials have emphasized that the search for the two soldiers remains a top priority for both their families and the military. The search operations include various military assets such as Moroccan helicopters and American aerial drones, showcasing a cooperative international effort to ensure the soldiers' safe return.
